Epidemiological studies on “super foul” in cattle

"Super foul" have been reported by several vets in France. But what are their cause(s) and how common are they? Two studies are starting in 2023 to provide some answers to these questions.

Description of the project

In recent years, cases of "super foul" have been reported in cattle. The animals are then affected by a very severe foul, with a very rapid progress and very important swelling of the foot, despite rapid and intensive treatment, which can lead to the loss of hooves and even to the death of the animal in a few days. Several animals can be affected within a few weeks in some farms.

Cases have already been reported in France but their frequency and origin are currently unknown.

Two studies are starting in 2023 to improve our knowledge of this affection:

  • Firstly, a survey of French rural veterinary practitioners to assess the incidence of “super foul” in 2022.
  • In parallel, the creation of a National Observatory for Super Foul (ONASUP) to collect as much information as possible on cases appearing from January 2023 onwards: clinical manifestations, circumstances of onset, additional examinations carried out, treatments undertaken and their results. This information will provide a better understanding of the frequency of occurrence of this condition and offer clues as to the factors that may favour its occurrence and/or persistence.

A case can thus be notified in the Observatory by a farmer, his hoof trimmer or his veterinarian.

The Observatory is open for one year. In spring 2024, the data will be analysed to decide whether or not it is necessary to maintain the Observatory and/or to launch other studies on this affection.
