Combating antimicrobial resistance by improving animal welfare and health in pig and chicken farming in Europe and China, without compromising farm productivity.

The HealthyLivestock (Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance through improved livestock Health & Welfare) project is part of an important field of work aimed at reducing the use of antibiotics in livestock farming and controlling the risk of the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that could eventually pose public health problems:

  • biosecurity to reduce the exposure of animal pathogens on farms,
  • improving the resilience of animals so that they do not become ill if exposed to pathogens,
  • early detection of diseases so that sick animals can be treated quickly,
  • better targeted use of antibiotics or alternatives when animals are sick.

Innovative approaches will include the development of biosecurity protocols with outcome indicators, the integration of automated methods to measure animal behaviour, welfare-friendly husbandry systems, as well as precision medicine for treatment delivery and the use of traditional Chinese medicines..

The feasibility and economic and societal viability of potential innovations will be assessed and application tools will be developed with the private project partners for the most promising ones.
Partners :HealthyLivestock is coordinated by Hans Spoolder from Wageningen Research and involves 11 academic partners (6 European, 5 Chinese) and 10 socio-economic partners. In Nantes, the BIOEPAR joint research unit is responsible for the biosafety work package where the expertise of researchers in the epidemiology and pathophysiology of infectious diseases of humans will be mobilised.
