Têtatic

Pirogotick: Launch of the programme Têtatic!

Why do ticks prefer Spirit the small bay pony to Tornado the big grey horse (or vice versa perhaps), when they are together in the same meadow? The Têtatic programme will try to answer this question.

The PiroGoTick project is a national participatory scientific research project on equine piroplasmosis and its vectors. Within this project, several programmes are studying the inventory and seasonal variation of equine tick species, as well as the genetic diversity of the two causative agents, Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. A new programme called Têtatic is being launched to understand the factors of attractiveness to ticks that cause some horses to be bitten more frequently or more heavily than others.

The objectives of this new programme are to:

1- To highlight a statistical difference in tick abundance between horses in the same pasture by identifying and quantifying the ticks collected separately from each horse.

2- Search for factors related to the horse that make some horses more frequently or more abundantly bitten than others, using a questionnaire on the characteristics of horses in the same meadow (morphology, character, general health).

Owners of 2 to 5 horses (or more) living in the same meadow can participate by completing an online questionnaire, and if they wish, by collecting ticks from their horses.

A veterinary student, Manon Eberhart, supported by the  PiroGoTick project team, analyse the data :

> to determine the equine factors that cause some to be bitten more frequently or more abundantly than others,

> to identify a statistical difference in tick abundance between equids.
