After a master's degree in medical biology at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), followed by a second master's degree in oceanography with a specialization in analytical chemistry at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (Canada), Kevin Osterheld pursued a doctorate in oceanography, with a specialization in aquaculture development and optimization. As part of his doctorate, he developed and improved methods for producing triploid mussels in hatchery conditions. In addition, his work showed a better attachment rate of triploid mussels as well as metabolic and physiological improvements, suggestingj strong potential for Canadian aquaculture.

He then continued his research during a post-doctoral fellowship at Dalhousie University in Halifax, focusing on optimizing triploid mussel production methods by combining the selection of broodstock with better attachment and survival. Currently a post-doctoral researcher at Oniris, within the APPIFISH team, he studies the invasive risks associated with the aquaculture of the freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Its objective is to determine the thermal tolerance limits of this species and the possibility of its acclimatization in temperate regions. He also analyzes the risks associated with species-specific pathogens. The results of his research will make it possible to assess the benefits and risks of producing Macrobrachium rosenbergii on a medium and large scale.
