François Beaudeau graduated in 1990 at the National Veterinary School of Nantes. He worked in rural veterinary practice before specialising in veterinary epidemiology. In 1994 he completed his PhD thesis entitled “cow’s health and farmer’s attitude towards the culling decision in dairy herds” at the department of Animal Husbandry (section of epidemiology) of Wageningen University (NL). Since 1995, he works at the Nantes-Atlantique National College of Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering (Oniris) as an associate professor (1995-2007), then a full Professor (2007 onwards) of quantitative epidemiology. From 2016 et 2021, he was also deputy head of the joint research group Oniris-INRA “Biology, Epidemiology and Risk Analysis in animal health”. François is a specialist of the European College of Veterinary Public Health. He uses population-based approaches (observational studies and epidemiological modelling) to better understand (eg. transmission mechanisms of pathogens and manage cattle health issues, effectiveness of control measures at within-herd and regional levels). Much of his current work focuses on Q fever and Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus infection in dairy cattle. He is also currently developing projects on zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance within the “One Health-EcoHealth” concept.
