Animal vector-borne diseases: modelling to understand persistence beyond winter

Modelling provides an understanding of the functioning of the complex biological systems involved in vector-borne diseases as a function of host and vector abundance.

The conditions for persistence of an arbovirus when vector abundance is seasonally dependent have been determined by taking into account different possible biological mechanisms for survival or transmission of a virus, including prolonged survival of the virus in its host or vector, maintenance of a small vector population during the winter, or transmission of the virus by the vector to its progeny.
